The answers you got are pretty good, but they failed to mention that an antivirus is a program that gets rid of viruses; they aren't bad for your computer (as long as you have just one). uber geek gave some good resources for information about viruses.





To protect your computer against viruses (including worms and trojans) you can use AntiVir (free, free-av.com). I use Norton on my main computer, but it isn’t free. Other free options include AVG and Avast. You should also occasionally scan your computer with Trend Micro HouseCall (free online virus scanner, housecall.trendmicro.com), just to be safe. Don’t install more than one antivirus program on your computer--it can cause serious problems--however you can use an online virus scanner while an antivirus program is installed on your computer.





You should also use Ad-Aware (free, lavasoft.com) to protect your computer from spyware.
