Should I volunteer for a suicide prevention hotline?

I'm thinking about volunteering for a suicide prevention hotline. Any advice? Are there personalities that are well-suited (or ill-suited) for this kind of work? I just want to weigh a few things before diving in head first.

Only if you are strong minded to handle that kind of talk
Reply:oo if u want 2, go for it, just make sure u no wat ur doing....
Reply:more power to ya if you do. a noble act of compassion. personally i'd rather kill myself than talk to depressed strangers....
Reply:If you feel very compassionate and sympathetic towards others who are in difficult situations, go for it...especially if you think you can save someone's life.
Reply:Absolutely! That's an awesome thing to do. Although you need to think about your emotions first. If you're the kind of person who gets too emotionally involved, don't do it... you'll lose your head.
Reply:Hi Andy, I would like to suggest to you that this is a very intense place to work. Please cocider gaining some experience with a "hotline" dealing with situations such as landlords and finding medical help. When you become more familier with the many sources that will be made available to you to help others and have some experience under your belt with less life and death situations you may feel more prepared for the intensity. having said all that I commend you for your willingness to help.
