How would you describe some of the computer crime prevention measures that government agencies?

How would you describe some of the computer crime prevention measures that government agencies and private corporations are taking. Explain which ones you think are most effective and why.

(I am doing a survey for my final project and would appreciate any positive input.)

In a word..... intrusive. A computer is a tool, just like a hammer or a chain saw or a knife. These instruments (just like a computer) can be used safely and legally or they can be used for illegal means. My question has always been, "Why punish the tool? Punish the person who misuses the tool."

People need to understand that the only computer that’s 100% secure is one that can’t be accessed by anyone or anything, which makes it completely unusable. Long before computers and computer crimes came along, the government (aka: law enforcement agencies) had to follow strict guidelines pertaining to probable cause, affidavits, search warrants, etc. But today, our government uses national security as the excuse to monitor computer usage, screen emails, steal entire computers to examine the hard drive, and so on and so forth.

My question is real simple. If it's OK for the government to intercept emails, would it also be OK for them to open and read your snail mail and intercept your VoIP phone calls? If you say yes it is, then you shouldn't have any problem if the government decides to kick in your door at 3am, without a warrant, all in the name of national security.

Crime prevention measures such as antivirus programs, phishing filters, etc. that protect ALL computer users is fine by me. But I'm old enough to remember when this country waged a battle against communism and dictatorships and government oppression. Seems we're turning into the very government we tried to eradicate, all in the name of national security. I leave you with a quote from one of this country's most influential people:

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

- Benjamin Franklin
