I took him to the vet at 4 months to get his rabies shot and microchip and the vet recommended heartworm prevention, which I started him on, but she didn't mention anything about ticks. Now it's tick season, and I don't know what to do. I didn't think of it while I was there. If he should be on it, is it ok to buy it online at dog.com? Or should I go back to the vet?
Also, which do you prefer Advantix, Frontline, etc?
My dog is a shih tzu.
Should my 5 month old puppy be on tick prevention meds?
Absolutely! I started my 12 week old puppy at 9 weeks on Advantix, at the suggestion of my vet.
Reply:yes u dont want ticks and fleas in ur house thats way bad
Reply:You don't need to see a vet about tick prevention unless your dog has special health concerns. I prefer frontline for my dogs, but make sure that you ask for the kind that fits your dogs size and age.
Reply:Are you having pest problems? What state are you in? Frontline Plus (don't even bother with regular Frontline) says it can be used on dogs eight weeks %26amp; older.
Good luck!
Reply:yes! it doesn't matter if he is little, you always want him to be protected. if dog.com is a good site go ahead and buy it from there. ask your friends which brands work better.
Reply:Absolutely! I recommend Advantix (it's flea/tick prevention all in one!), just be sure to get the proper weight amount!
Reply:I have two Maltese. They have been on meds since they they were 8 weeks old. My Vet prescribes heartworm meds AND flea/tick meds for every month of the year. The heartworm med doesn't just work on heartworms. It also takes care of the other parasites your dog can contact.
I also put the Frontline Plus on every month. You can get a prescription for meds from your Vet and order on line. You need to be careful of that because the price might be cheaper, but they get you on the shipping charge. If you are ordering a lot of stuff, it's O.K. Because they drop the shipping charges then. Just check it out......
I want my dogs to be as healthy and safe as they can be. So I use these products monthly to be sure they are covered. They have never had worms of any kind. How do I know this? My Vet does a fecal sample test on them to be sure.
Reply:Yes!!! They should be on flea and tick prevention from an EARLY age (I think Bayer says 8 weeks or could it be 12? on the box?)
They should be on it ALL YEAR LONG because it doesn't mean that fleas don't exist in the winter either. Advantix is great for fleas, ticks and mosquitos. Frontline is for fleas, ticks and chewing lice. It depends on which you want. They can get diseases like lyme disease from ticks so you want them on it at all times!!
Hope this helps ^_^
PS most places will price match so just ask them what to do to get it and save some money on expensive medicine. Ebay is not the way to go as apparently there are counterfit products out there even if they promise it is genuine (so says the vet I work with)
Reply:YES_YES YES! i live in calif. we have ticks and fleas year round- Frontline ! ASAP- it s the best and he's plenty ole enough!
Reply:yes, they should be on some sort of flea and tick medication. i use revolution on my dog. works great.
