How to get neighbours to help in crime prevention?

How to get neighbours to help in crime prevention? It has been traditional that most neighbours will not respond much when crime happens around their area. They would not like to be involved in assisting most of the time.

I would pass out flyers stating that you are holding a meeting about the crime that has been going on. Once everyone shows up inform them that it would be helpful for everyone to participate because anyone of them could become a victim to the crime that has been going on in the area.
Reply:Start a neighborhood watch.
Reply:always treat your neighbour as a friends. Always ask him to come your house. Meet them with ur family... do the job together.

As you know, we Malaysian do like that to prevent the crime reventation. It's important.

For me, we as family always greet our neighbour. Go them if they in need. So, when we do have problem. They came and help us. And watch out our house if we leave the house.
Reply:I started a neighborhood watch in my neighborhood and I can only speak from my experience with it --- it was not worth it.

You get a handful of people who are concerned, the rest figure their homeowners insurance will pay for any damages and they could use some new stuff anyway. Or maybe they were just afraid, I don't know.

I'll tell you what worked best. A few of us fought back.

It worked damn good. We are the only neighborhood in the whole town who has not had a random act of violence in about 5 years.

We did not do anything illegal, we were just intimidating.

Post a sign on your door that says the premises are being video taped, that helps a whole lot. I made a video camera quite visible in my front window. I bought a couple fake ones and put them on the roof. I left a toy gun in my car, on the dashboard and backed my car into the driveway, just off the street.

Drive or walk around a lot at night with some other neighbors. Make yourself visible.

Funny thing is I took 2 of the punks to court because I had proof they had stolen something out of my yard. Each defendant was ordered to pay back $48.88 within 30 days. It never happened and I wasn't about to spend $40 to file a small claims case against them (don't know why I could not file a contempt of court order, I have forgotten, but I remember thinking it was stupid) Anyway 5 years and 2 weeks later, which was this last week, I got a check from the courts, one of the defendants finally paid up. I think because one of them is 23 yrs old now that he is probably trying to get the black mark off his credit rating.

Good luck
Reply:I have been involved in neighborhood crime prevention for 38 years. I agree that fear can make it difficult to get the community involved. However, you can change that if you get the pastors involved. For more information, see my website and look for "Pastors" at the top of welcome page. www.StephanieLMann.com
