I get incapacitating migraines (throwing up for hours, unbearable pain, passing out, etc) are there prevention

medications out there? I have a very important job, where I cannot afford to get sick often and yesterday I had the worst migraine I've EVER had, it was horrible! I have since made an appointment with a neurologist. Is there any hope for me? Is there prevention medication? I took IMITREX once and it made me soooo sick and made my migraine so much worse. What do you think?

migraines can sometimes be triggered by a food, keep a diary of when you have the migraine, what you were doing before it's onset and what you had to eat. Try to identify any "triggers" then in future avoid the trigger. This is not always the case, but if you keep this record and take it with you when you see the neurologist, they may be able to identify triggers that you have missed.

I sympathise, good luck
Reply:Been there.....first I was prescribed Imitex (10+ years ago), it worked a little but caused stomach upset. Then I was prescribed Relpax, which worked better w/ no stomach or other side effects. Last year when the migraines started again (stress, alergy and ocular/vision problems caused my frequent migraines) the Relpax did not work at all, had MRI and CAT scan, nothing was wrong neurologically so I was prescribed Topamax as preventative medication and Zomig for the actual migraine. Also have better corrective lenses as my glasses were actually too strong. Talk to your regular dr. before going the neurologist.
Reply:yes there are preventatives. i have been on some for the better part of 9 years. made life more bearable. i was miserable and with 2 year old (at the time) twins ,being down for days with migraine was NOT an option. i would talk to your dr about them. also imitrex did not work for me but there are many others out there. if the first one didnt work, try another.
