Fleas are REALLY bad this year and I'm finding even the "guaranteed" flea preventions aren't helping 100%. I'm just curious to hear what everyone else uses--topical, oral, spray, shampoo? I've been told table salt, garlic and brewer's yeast are excellent flea-fighters. Anyone use those? Anything else? Thank you!
What do you use for flea-prevention?
I use Frontline plus...I also treat my yard , But you are right the fleas are horrible this year..Ticks too!..I'm thinking of getting some Advantix just to see if the fleas are getting immune to having the same product used on them over and over.
Reply:no idea
Reply:I tried all that organic crap and found it did not work.
I have found REVOLUTION works best. With some of the other treatments the fleas will jump on my dog and live for a week or so before dying. With REVOLUTION the fleas don't even jump on her. I never see them. I do have a good organic type treatment for your home. When my dog was infested, and therefore my house. I set flea traps. At night cool your house down and turn off as many lights as possible. Place a night light on an open wall. Under the night light place a paper plate with a light colored dish soap. The fleas are attracted to the warmth and fall into the dish soap. When the soap dries toss the plate and set out a new one till you don't catch any more fleas.
Reply:I've used Frontline for years and it works great. I use the stuff you squeeze on their backs. They also make stuff that you can spray that is supposed to work faster for heavy infestations. I've never had to use that (thank God) but I've heard it works. My friends dog had fleas really bad and that's what she did.
Reply:try k9 advantix
Reply:i,have been told that you can use what is called garden dust to get rid of fleas
Reply:I like advantage for an animal that spends most of thier time indoors. But if it's an animal that spends a lot of time outside, then I would reccommend advantix, because it covers fleas, ticks and mosquitos.
Reply:I use Bio-Spot
it works well and is not really expensive.
I have been using it for about 10 years.
Reply:While the newer flea products (FrontLine and Advantage) are very good, if the numbers of fleas in the environment are extremely high, then you will see fleas on your animals . . . these products don't "repel" fleas but will kill the ones that get on your pet. So, if your dog/cat walks through your yard (or house) and there are thousands of fleas there . . . the bugs will jump on your animal . . . sure, they'll be killed later but they will still have the bugs on them (eeewww!).
So, the key to controlling fleas during a bumper crop year is to treat the environment as well as the pet. Use a good insecticidal spray in your house and yard. If you choose the "fogger-type" sprays, remember to spray where those don't reach (under the beds, under tables, sofas, etc.). Vacuum well before and after the treatment and throw the vacuum bags away (the fleas will hatch out of the bags). When treating your yard, don't bother spraying in the areas that get lots of sun, spray in the shady areas or damp (mulched) areas.
You MUST repeat the environmental control in 2 weeks to interrupt the life cycle of the flea. There is one stage that no spray can kill (pupal stage). The little sucker are virtually in a bomb shelter during the pupal stage and no insecticide cn penetrate the shell. Those will hatch out in 2 week cycles, so that's why it's important to repeat the environmental treatment. You may have to do this several times at 2 week intervals.
Speak with your local veterinarian about effective and safe insecticides that work i your area of the country.
Reply:use Adavaage and put a flea collar on your pet and give him/her a flea dip every month and you can put a bowl of soapy water under a lamp and the fleas will jump in it and drown so that will help take care of the fleas in your house
Reply:Frontline Plus, It works great!
Reply:I use the otc, Bio Spot. Costs less and works just as well as what the vets sell. Been using it for over 10 yrs. I have 3 of my own dogs and also have used it on all the rescues that I take in. They are all inside dogs.
