Erosion prevention methods are used on a river, ie. rip rap. What effect will this have downstream?

If you put in something that prevents erosion in one place, you will get more erosion in another place. This is actually a huge problem in shoreline environments: one person puts out a jetty to save their personal beach, someone else loses their personal beach and gains a lasting hatred for their neighbor. Plus you'll lose that sediment load at that point, which can have environmental effects downstream. This is a bigger problem when dams are put in, which completely shut off sediment transport and thus contribute to the deterioration of wetlands.

On rip, hardly any. On rap, let's hope they ban it.
Reply:did u or your family and house got swept by a flood or a landslide. Why are u asking such questions
Reply:It would depend on how far down stream. Imediately after the rip rap would be a slight swirling action, then 20 to 25 feet there would be no action. No contamination after initial placement, once rip rap is settled.
Reply:It prevent the movement of sediment downstream and this can radically change the profile of the downstream stream bed and therefor the organisms that can or can't live there.
